Assembly Cook Jobs description

Assembly cooking involves doing a certain amount of preparatory work in order to enjoy the convenience of making on-the-fly meals later. Often, assembly cooking is adopted as a strategy for streamlining food purchases.

Assembly cooks use a certain number of tools and infrastructure items to keep the bulk-cooking ball rolling. They include: multiple sizes of re-sealable freezer bags, ranging from one gallon to pint and snack-sized; masking tape to label containers; a medium to fine tip permanent marker; extra-large airtight containers; canning jars; metal baking pans with lids; ice-cube trays; and freezers.

By and large, assembly cooks make use of the following: dry mixes and spice blends – bread mixes, spice blends for meat rubs and baking, giant batches of dry ingredient mixes for baking mix, dry soup base, pizza crust and more; canning – for recipes suited for the water bath technique, oven sealing for homemade glazed and roasted nuts, or spaghetti sauce; dry ingredient kits – for coleslaw, taco seasoning, etc.; freezer cooking - casseroles, appetizers, desserts etc.

There are many shortcuts and strategies that assembly cooks adopt to ensure stringent timelines are met for bulk cooking. These include: a mix and match approach to storage; maintaining flexible batch sizes; precision while purchasing small appliances; an assembly line way of production; effective planning and scheduling of tasks; and themed prep sessions, where massive meal prepping is done based on an abundance of a particular item.
